History
The Assyrians were a Semitic- speaking people (also called the Akkadians). They used iron weapons to establish an empire in 700 B.C. Within less than 100 years the empire was torn apart by internal conflict. In 612 B.C. the empire fell to the Chaldeans and Medes. Kings, whose power was absolute, ruled it. Local officials reported directly to the king. The Assyrian people created the first postal system and the first library (established in Nineveh) followed shortly after. The Assyrians conquered many because they were good leaders and fighters. They also used terror as a war tactic (also called psychological warfare).
